Believe it or not, ordering a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte is only one way to welcome this season. (Psst! Find out how to order a Healthier Pumpkin Spice Latte without sacrificing the flavor).
Whether or not the weather where we are is cooperating, Fall is officially here. Even with our unseasonably warm temperatures in sunny San Diego, as I shared with you earlier this week, I have certainly been Feeling Fall – and baking the Fall recipes to prove it!
I’m sharing with you 5 of my Hip, Simple, Fabulous™ Ways to Add Fall Flavor Right now! Get ready to Feel Fall!
1. Add In! Pumpkin (or Squash)
Eat Inspired Today Tip: Add a tablespoon or 3 of canned pumpkin to your favorite dish.
The perfect addition to every meal for true Fall flavor – squash! Choose pumpkin, butternut, acorn, spaghetti or subtle delicata for a hint of Fall. We’ve been known to add pumpkin to our pancakes and oatmeal, squash to our pasta and gluten-free desserts and yes, even to our puddings!
Chop, slice, dice or grate swuash and sprinkled over salads, pastas and sides. We love using our mandoline to shave curly ringlets of raw squash over our dishes. Chopped and roasted or steamed squashes add rich flavor and texture transforming a typical dish into a tasty seasonal treat. Substitute spaghetti squash for half or all of your pasta for a sumptuous and nutritious side. Each of these winter squash varieties is rich in carotenes as well as an excellent source of vitamins B1, B6 and C, folic acid, fiber, potassium and niacin which may offer protection against many forms of cancer.
2. Spice it Up!
Eat Inspired Today Tip: Sprinkle any of these favorites over your dish for a quick Fall favorite!
Well-known for their antioxidant powers and anti-inflammatory properties, cinnamon, nutmeg, turmeric and cardamom each add their own distinct Fall flavors to everything from roasted butternut squash to warm almond milk, pancakes and muffins. Add a dash to your rice dish, quinoa, warm drink or morning cereal for a shortcut to Fall flavor!
3. An Apple a Day
Eat Inspired Today Tip: Adding sliced or roasted apple or applesauce instantly shifts a dish into Fall form!
Sliced or grated apples are easily roasted along with other root or Brussels Sprouts for a deliciously, light and sweet Fall flavor. Sprinkle grated apples into pancake batters and baked goods for a moist and tasty hint of Fall. Here are 6 Serious Health Benefits of Apples!
4. Add In! Mushrooms
Eat Inspired Today Tip: Incorporate mushrooms for an earthy, Fall flavor and texture!
Lightly sautéed and sprinkled over salads, pastas or flat breads mushrooms add a rich, earthy flavor reminiscent of Fall. Primarily water, mushrooms are low in calories, sodium and fat and rich in potassium, riboflavin and selenium. In addition to their unique texture, mushrooms may help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of stroke and prostate cancer.
5. Seeds of Change!
Eat Inspired Today Tip: Toss a handful of pumpkin, sunflower, chia or hemp seeds over your dish for a nutrient and flavor boost!
Seeds add a delicious crunch and their warm, almost nutty flavor to dishes. Packed with nutrients seeds are a perfect way to add seasonal taste and texture to warm breakfast cereals, yogurt parfaits, salads, pastas and rice or grain dishes.
Bonus – Get Local! Produce
Eat Inspired Today Tip: Shopping at your local markets make sit super easy to include the latest seasonal ingredients to create your own regional Fall flavors!
It’s simple to add a subtle taste of Fall to meals when you shop at your local Farmer’s Market. Delicious, farm-fresh and unique-to-your location seasonal Fall finds may include grapes, artichokes, fall greens (such as arugula, beet, chard and cabbage), passion fruits, dragon fruits and many more. Including a few of these seasonal fresh foods from your local harvest into any dish quickly infuses them with a distinctly Fall flavor.
I’m fortunate to do what I love and love what I do, which allows me the ability to go for mid-day walks through the park, practice early morning yoga under the trees, cook daily Hip, Simple, Fabulous™ foods for myself and my clients and truly savour the feeling of Fall with each and every one of my senses. It was just a little over 1 year ago that I returned to school and made a BIG shift in my business AND my life. It’s been a journey in listening, slowing down and creating my very own life. I wish you each the opportunity to slow down and truly savour this season and all of its bountiful gifts!
