Over the past few days I witnessed an interesting discussion on Facebook. No, not about politics and the upcoming elections, although there was a VOTE involved...
A friend was inquiring between the benefits of two dietary approaches. She asked: Vegan or Paleo? Which one?
That was all. A simple question. But there was no simple, clear, black-and-white answer...
The conversation that ensued was fascinating. Many personal stories of food, health and solutions that had worked for each individual, along with recommendations.
Here is what struck me: EACH INDIVIDUAL
Just as in my own nutrition coaching practice, each story was uniquely personal. This post reaffirmed my own philosophy.
I believe in bio-individuality. This approach allows me to treat each client as a unique individual.
Many of my potential clients are surprised to learn this. While I myself am gluten-free, I do not believe that gluten-free is for everyone. I embrace an open-minded approach. I seek to find the uniquely personal recipe for each of my clients that will support them to look, feel and perform their own personal BEST.
And bottom line each of us is truly one-of-a-kind. So why would we assume that a one-size-fits-all approach would work for us?
But often times, that's exactly what we do.
We try ____ diet or eating just like ____ because this friend, colleague, rock star or family member has found success with this approach. And then guess what? Do we think to ourselves, I'm a unique individual who has his/her own unique needs and this just isn't the right fit for me?
We beat ourselves up because this approach didn't work for us.....and so WE, unique individual that we are, assume that we must have done something wrong. When really, we simply have yet to find the JUST RIGHT FOR ME fit. Just like in Goldilocks...each one of us has a "just right."
How do we choose how to eat? Oh, how convenient and simple it would be if there was a one-size-fits-all answer!
How do we find our own unique JUST RIGHT? What did Goldilocks do? She tried each one , of course!
This is my philosophy:
When someone asks me whether x diet or y lifestyle is better, which happens often, my answer is BOTH, for different reasons and different individuals.
This is usually the beginning of a wonderful dialogue around what has been tried in the past, what has worked for a time and what has failed miserably. I love hearing everyone's uniquely individual experiences.
Here are a few guidelines for those of us asking the question "How do I choose how to eat?"
Take the time to allow yourself to try different approaches and philosophies.
Experience, notice, feel, and listen to your own body and your own uniquely personal and authentic responses.
Enjoy the journey and the process of experimenting.
Accept where you are at in this process and most importantly, withhold judgement - towards yourself and others.
Get excited! Because when you find your very own JUST RIGHT, everything falls into place. It's one of the many reasons I love what I do. Watching people transform their lives through the foods they eat - POWERFUL stuff!
When we live our authentic, just right for us lives - the Universe responds...
Where are you on this journey? Have you found the JUST RIGHT FOR YOU way of eating? Or are you still searching for what works best for you?
What diets, lifestyles and philosophies have you experimented with? What has worked for you? What has not worked at all? What has helped you the most along your way?
I hope you'll share with us in the comments below. The journey is always better with friends!
I look forward to hearing what becomes of your experiments! And if you'd like a partner for the journey, a knowledgeable resource, consistent support and accountability along the way - let's connect today!
